Quiz Winners - 2010
THE CIU National Quiz title has returned to Wales for the first time in three years.
Maesglas Sports & Social Club from Newport received the trophy from Cwmbran-based Colin Tapper of sponsors Freeclaim IDC, the company behind the CIU Benefit Card. The team also received bottles of whisky and vodka from co-sponsors The Co-operative Bank.
The team, Trevor Parry, Richie Parnell, Gordon Galliford and Colin Lloyd led from the start and scored an impressive 57 and a half points on a tough set of questions from setter Dave Cornish, the author of “How to Win at Quizzes.” Their achievement was all the more impressive as regular team member Mark Labbett, now appearing on the TV show “The Chase” was not playing, though he did come to watch the final at Alvaston & Crewton Social Club in Derby along with Egghead CJ de Mooi.
Last year’s winners Radford Social Club from Coventry were runners-up with 54 points and the Ashford Road A team from Swindon were third, pipping Newcastle’s Gosforth Empire Club on the tiebreak, The Empire team, who were also missing one of their regular players and who last won the title in 2002, were level with Maesglas going into the last two rounds but had a poor round seven.
As in the heats there were also prizes of £60 for the winners of the sports round and the TV & films round and £20 for the team finishing second last. Smawthorne Lane Club from Castleford won the sports round while Trefelin WMC from Port Talbot won the TV & films round and the Sydney Street A team from Accrington won the consolation prize.
Syd Rawcliffe and John Hindle from Sydney Street’s B team won spot prizes with the closest guesses to unlikely questions like the lowest amount of votes won by a successful candidate in this year’s General Election. (6,732 by Angus McNeil in the Western Isles).
