Other regional finals have taken place at Stanley Road, Blackpool (North West); Leatherhead & District Social (South East) and Far Cotton WMC, Northampton (Midlands & South). The top three teams from each regional final will compete in the the National Final at Alvaston & Crewton Social Club, Derby on Sunday, September 12.

THE CIU Quiz is a chance to have a fun night out and win some money, even if you’re not that good at quizzes!

The quiz, which is sponsored by Freeclaim IDC, the company behind the CIU Benefit Card, is now in its eleventh year — and the previous ten have seen seven different winning teams.

The emphasis of the quiz is very much on fun with questions designed to be worked out rather than being a test of memory. As well as prizes for the top three in each quiz there are cash prizes for sport, TV and films and for the club which finishes second bottom.

Quiz Updates

THE LAST three places have been claimed in the final of this year’s Freeclaim IDC/CIU National Quiz Final in Derby.

A lively evening at Lemington Social Club in Newcastle saw Newbottle WMC near Sunderland finish first, ahead of rivals Gosforth Empire Club, three of whose team also compete against them in the Sunderland Quiz League.
Another local rivalry saw Lemington Labour Club, who have hosted the North East heat in the past make the short trip down the hill to “the bottom club” to clinch a place in the final by finishing third. The Social Club didn’t live up to their nickname as their B team finished eighth and their A team won the £20 consolation prize for finishing second bottom, and that was despite being handicapped as they’d attended a Committee member’s wake at the club in the afternoon.
The regional final, which was co-sponsored by Bissett Kenning & Newiss, was attended by several members of the Northumberland Branch Executive including National Executive member Sid Hicks. In his introduction organiser Chris Brewis said he had recently heard of clubs in the South where the attitude of some Club Secretaries meant even Committee members had not heard of Club Journal and did not know about the Union’s extensive games programme despite every club being sent a poster.

Fortunately this was not the case in Northumberland because of the work of the Branch Executive members. A determined effort by the Branch and by Club Secretary Tom Satterthwaite meant seven teams entered this year’s quiz who were not at last year’s quiz and two of them, Innisfree Social from Newcastle and Relton Terrace Club from Chester-le-Street won £40 by being the top scorers from outside the top three in the sport and TV & Films rounds. They were also among the winners of the spot prizes for the closest guess to such questions as “How many chapters are there in the Kama Sutra?” — which was answered exactly. (There are 36.)
The top three from each of the six regional finals — at Blackpool (North West), Leatherhead (South East), Northampton (Midlands), Newport(South Wales & West of England), Normanton (Yorkshire) and Newcastle — have qualified for the final at Alvaston & Crewton Mens Social Club  at 1pm on Sunday, September 12, where the top prize is £500. courtesy of national sponsors Freeclaim IDC, the company behind the CIU Benefit Card. The final is also being co-sponsored by The Co-operative Bank.
