THE CIU Quiz is a chance to have a fun night out and win some money, even if you’re not that good at quizzes!
The quiz, which is sponsored by Freeclaim IDC, the company behind the CIU Benefit Card, is now in its eleventh year — and the previous ten have seen seven different winning teams.
The emphasis of the quiz is very much on fun with questions designed to be worked out rather than being a test of memory. As well as prizes for the top three in each quiz there are cash prizes for sport, TV and films and for the club which finishes second bottom.
Two-times runners-up Sydney Street A from Accrington were crowned North West quiz champions for the first time after they pipped last year’s winners, the club’s B team. Easier questions meant both sides finished equal with 62 points out of a possible 70 and the contest was decided by a Quite Interesting tiebreak question: how many editions of the Stephen Fry “quiz” programme QI have there been? The show has just finished items beginning with H so some teams deduced there have been eight series of about 13 programmes each and a few specials. Sydney Street guessed 106, two away from the correct answer of 108.
Syd Rawcliffe from the club’s B team won a bottle of wine with the closest answer to the spot prize question: “According to the British Glycaemia Association how many times on average does a nine-stone person need to have sex to lose a pound in weight?” (64)
Trevor Beebe from national sponsors Dransfields presented the winners with a cheque for £160 while the spot prizes of a bottle of spirits were provided by co-sponsors The Co-operative Bank and rating specialists Bissett Kenning & Newiss.
Two more regional finals were scheduled in early May at Leatherhead on Wednesday, May 4 and Northampton on Thursday, May 5 and others will be at:
Newport (South Wales and West of England) on Monday, June 6;
Newcastle (North East) Thursday, June 23 and
Normanton (Yorkshire) on Tuesday, July 12.
Entries officially closed on April 21 but sometimes there is room for late entries. Contact organiser Chris Brewis on 07768650189 or cj@powdene.com.
