GOSFORTH Empire Club from Newcastle gave the Dransfields/CIU National Quiz its fourth different champions in four years — the same number there have been in the whole of the history of the Premier League.
In the 2011 national final at Alvaston & Crewton Social Club in Derby the Empire Club finished above the last three winners of the title, runners-up Radford Social Club from Coventry, third-placed Maesglas Sports & Social, Newport and Ashford Road Club, Swindon, who were fourth.
Thanks to national sponsors Dransfields there was a top prize of £500 with £200 for second and £100 for third. The winners also received bottles of spirits from co-sponsors The Co-operative Bank while the runners-up received bottles of beer from brewers Coors.
As in the regional finals prizes were also awarded for the team finishing second last and the best scores in the Sports Round and TV & Films Round by teams outside the top three. Shottermill WMC from Haslemere in Surrey won the consolation prize with Smawthorne Lane, Castleford winning the sports prize and Sydney St B from Accrington beating everybody including the top three in the TV & Films Round.
The questions were set by Dave Cornish from Enfield, author of How to Win at Quizzes, who will again be setting the questions in the 2012 quiz. As befits a final they were much tougher than those in the six regional finals. See how you do, we have in some cases included some clues (in brackets).
