The Union’s Schools are currently based on a combined format covering topics in both Club Law and Club Finance. They are currently held at Saltburn House with the course starting on a Friday afternoon and finishing on a Sunday afternoon.
Enrolment forms and posters advertising the course are sent to every club approximately a month before the course is due to start.
The last union school was held at Saltburn House from Friday 28th October 2011 to Sunday 30th October 2011. Subjects covered throughout the school weekend were primary cash records and cash accounts, banking reconciliation, revenue and balance sheet, VAT, Stock taking, Employment Law, Club Rules, Suspensions and Expulsions, Club Committees and Club Officials.
Students at the last union school were given multiple choice quizzes covering aspects of the club law and administration section whereby they reported to have found the quizzes both useful for confirming knowledge they had just learnt from the course weekend as well as refreshing knowledge students already had.
Students on departure from the course are asked to fill out a short questionnaire so that the course weekend can be reviewed and changes made to ensure that the course is as much benefit to club officials and club members as it can be.
Previous Union School questionnaire analysis has shown that students not only value the information given to them in the lectures but also the opportunity to talk to lecturers who have had many years experiences working with clubs and trying to help resolve the issues that are causing clubs problems. Another benefit is meeting other club officials and members from different clubs all over the country to share ideas on how to get clubs thriving again and what issues one club might have faced whilst another is going through it.
Students when attending Union School’s are advised to bring with them a copy of their own club rules and a copy of their own club accounts so that students can relate the information in the lectures to their own clubs management as much as possible in order to get the most benefit out of the course weekend.
It is advised that those students who enroll onto the Club Management Diploma Course should look into attending these schools as the context is very similar to the subject areas if the course and there is an opportunity to ask those that organized the course itself and who mark the exams any queries they have regarding the course.
